Characters 4–8: model, body and engine
The 4th character on Ford trucks and SUVs is the gross vehicle weight or restraint code; characters 5–7 identify the line and body, for example W1E on an F-150 SuperCrew 4x4, and the 8th character is the engine code.

How do I know a VIN is a Ford?
The first three characters (the WMI) identify the maker. Ford WMIs are listed in the table on this page, as registered with NHTSA under 49 CFR Part 565.
Does a Ford VIN show the options?
The VIN shows model, body, engine, year and plant. Paint, packages and original MSRP are on the Ford window sticker, which you can pull from the VIN.
What is the check digit?
The 9th character. It is calculated from the other 16, so a typo or altered VIN fails the check.
