Checking a car you want to buy?

You don't need the owner. Decode the VIN with our VIN decoder (NHTSA vPIC plus open recalls), then read the vehicle history report guide. Can you find the owner? See our explainer.

Questions people ask

Can I look up a license plate on the DMV website?

State DMVs do not offer a public plate-to-owner search. Owner names and addresses are personal information under the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) and are released only for permitted uses, usually through a written request.

Who can get DMV records for a plate?

The DPPA lists permitted uses such as law enforcement and government agencies, courts and legal proceedings, insurers, vehicle safety recalls, and certain business uses. Each state adds its own forms, fees and identity checks.

What can I get without the DMV?

Vehicle facts that are not personal: year, make, model and trim from the VIN, open safety recalls from NHTSA, and title-brand history through NMVTIS-based reports.

What if I need the owner for an accident or a parked car?

Report it to the police or your insurer. They can obtain owner information through permitted channels; a private website cannot legally give it to you.
