Temporary License Plate Lookup: How to Verify a Paper Tag
There is no nationwide public lookup for temporary tags. A paper tag is issued by a dealer or a state agency, and the record sits with them — not in a searchable public database. Here is how to verify one before you pay.
The short answer
You cannot run a temporary tag number through a public website and get a verified result. To check a paper tag, read the tag, match it to the VIN and paperwork, then call the dealer and the state motor vehicle agency. If the tag looks altered or the seller refuses the paperwork, call police.
What a temporary tag is
A temporary tag — also called a paper tag, transit tag or dealer tag — lets a vehicle be driven while the title, registration or metal plates are being processed. It is usually issued by a licensed dealer or a state motor vehicle office, and it carries an expiration date. The design, duration and rules vary by state.
Why a "temporary tag lookup" site cannot verify it
Temporary tag records are held by the issuing dealer and the state agency. They are not a public, searchable database. A website that claims it can "verify" a temporary tag is usually collecting your information or selling a vehicle history report — it cannot confirm that the tag was lawfully issued. Do not enter a Social Security number or driver's license number on a site that promises to "verify" a tag.
How to verify a paper tag
- Read the tag. Note the state, tag number, dealer name and license number, issue date and expiration date. A valid tag should have printed — not handwritten — dealer and expiration details.
- Match the VIN. The VIN on the tag, the car's dashboard, the title and the bill of sale should be the same. A mismatch is a stop sign.
- Call the dealer. Use the number from the dealer's own website, not the number printed on a suspicious tag. Ask whether the tag was issued for that VIN and whether the title application was submitted.
- Call the state agency. Your state's motor vehicle office or dealer licensing board can confirm whether the dealer is licensed and what a valid tag should look like.
- Get the paperwork. Ask for the bill of sale, title application, odometer statement and the temporary tag receipt. The seller's name should match the title.
- Check the vehicle, not just the tag. Decode the VIN for factory specs and open recalls; a history report covers title brands, accidents and odometer records.
Red flags
- Handwritten tag, or a tag with no dealer name or license number.
- Expired tag, or a tag that expires before the seller can deliver the title.
- An out-of-state paper tag on a private-party sale with no dealer involved.
- The seller refuses to show the VIN, title or bill of sale.
- "The tag will come later" after you pay.
- A price far below market, or a demand for wire transfer, crypto or gift cards.
If you bought a car with a fake tag
Keep the bill of sale, tag, photos and messages. Contact your state motor vehicle agency and the police non-emergency line; ask for the process to get a valid title and registration. Do not alter the tag or drive on an expired one. If you financed the car, tell the lender as well.
State motor vehicle agencies
Temporary tag rules vary by state. Start with the agency that issued the vehicle's title or registration.
Check the vehicle before you buy
Decode the VIN for factory specs and open NHTSA recalls, then open the state guide for title and inspection rules. A vehicle history report adds title brands, accidents and odometer records.

There is no nationwide public lookup for temporary tags. The record is held by the issuing dealer and the state agency; verify it with them, or with police if you suspect a fake tag.
How long is a temporary tag valid?
Validity varies by state and by the type of tag. The expiration date is printed on the tag; confirm the rule with the state agency that issued it.
Is a paper tag legal?
Yes, when it is issued by a licensed dealer or a state agency and is still valid. An altered, expired or dealer-less tag is not.

Do not drive on an expired tag. Contact the dealer or the state agency to get a valid tag or registration, and keep the paperwork with the car.
Can I transfer a temporary tag to another car?
Generally no. Temporary tags are issued for a specific vehicle and VIN; check the rule with your state agency before using one on another car.
What information is on a temporary tag?
It varies, but a valid tag usually shows the state, tag number, issuing dealer or agency, issue and expiration dates, and sometimes the VIN or stock number.
