Classic Car Vehicle History Report: What the VIN Covers
A classic car vehicle history report starts with the VIN format. Cars from 1981 on carry the 17-character VIN and get the full report. Older classics carry maker-set VINs of 11 or 13 characters, so the check runs on that exact number alongside the title, cowl tag and state VIN verification.

Why Pre-1981 Classics Sit Outside the 17-Character System
Federal rule 49 CFR Part 565 requires a 17-character VIN on vehicles from model year 1981. Before that date, each manufacturer set its own VIN length and format. A 1965 model and a 1972 model from the same brand can carry identifiers of different lengths with no standardized positions. The NHTSA vPIC decoder covers model year 1981 and newer. EpicVIN's classic car VIN lookup accepts 11- and 13-character pre-1981 VINs and returns the records filed under that exact number; read that result next to the title and the cowl tag.
For older classics, the paper trail carries the weight. The title document, state VIN verification and a physical check of the stamped numbers on the frame, engine and door jamb establish identity. State rules reflect this split:
- North Carolina verifies out-of-state vehicles of model year 1980 or older through the DMV License and Theft Bureau before titling (G.S. 20-53(e)).
- Georgia does not title a 1963-1985 vehicle last registered in a non-title state.
How a 17-Character VIN Is Built
Every 17-character VIN follows the same architecture. Positions 1-3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. Position 9 is a check digit. Position 10 is the model year code. The VIN never uses the letters I, O or Q, which keeps them from being confused with 1 and 0.
| Positions | Content |
|---|---|
| 1-3 | World Manufacturer Identifier |
| 9 | Check digit |
| 10 | Model year code |
The VIN tool on this page decodes any 17-character VIN (model year 1981 and newer) with NHTSA vPIC data: year, make, model, trim, engine, body and plant. It also lists open NHTSA safety recalls for that VIN at no cost. NHTSA vPIC is the federal VIN decoding database built from manufacturer submissions.
What the EpicVIN Report Adds for 1981+ Classics
Decoding confirms what the car is. A full vehicle history report confirms what happened to it. Full reports (title brands, odometer readings, total-loss records) come from the partner EpicVIN: $1 for a 3-day trial, then a monthly plan until you cancel.
NMVTIS, the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System run by the U.S. Department of Justice, collects title brands (salvage, junk, flood, rebuilt), odometer readings from titles, and total-loss reports from insurers, junk and salvage yards. Brands follow the VIN across states, so a salvage brand from one state appears on the record in the next. DPPA (18 U.S.C. 2721) keeps owner names, addresses and phone numbers in DMV records private except for permissible purposes; this site shows vehicle data only.
Buyer Checks for a 1981+ Classic
- Match the VIN on the dashboard, driver door jamb and title.
- Decode the VIN and compare year, model and engine to the listing.
- Check open NHTSA safety recalls for that VIN.
- Check title brands, odometer and total-loss history before paying.
NHTSA's recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls searches by VIN and covers safety recalls from the past 15 calendar years. It reports recalls only, not accidents, title brands or ownership history. Recall repairs are done at no charge by a franchised dealer. Run the EpicVIN report on the VIN before money changes hands.

Questions people ask
Does a vehicle history report cover a pre-1981 classic?
Yes, on the exact number. Pre-1981 classics carry maker-set VINs, often 11 or 13 characters, and EpicVIN's classic car VIN lookup searches the records filed under that number. The NHTSA vPIC decoder covers 1981 and newer only, so confirm a pre-1981 car with the title, the cowl tag and state VIN verification.
