Car VIN Check: What the VIN Shows and What Needs a Paid History Report
A 17-character VIN identifies a specific vehicle, and a VIN check turns that string into facts: build details, engine, plant and open safety recalls. Title brands, odometer readings and total-loss records sit outside that data and require a paid vehicle history report before you pay.

What a VIN Decode Returns at No Cost
The VIN tool on this page decodes any 17-character VIN from model year 1981 and newer using NHTSA vPIC data. vPIC is the federal VIN decoding database built from manufacturer submissions. The decode returns year, make, model, trim, engine, body style and assembly plant.
The same tool lists open NHTSA safety recalls for that VIN. NHTSA's recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls searches by VIN and covers safety recalls from the past 15 calendar years. Recall repairs are performed at no charge by a franchised dealer.
| Check | Source | What It Reports |
|---|---|---|

| Safety recalls | NHTSA recall lookup | Open safety recalls from the past 15 calendar years |
| Title brands | NMVTIS via EpicVIN | Salvage, junk, flood, rebuilt brands |
| Odometer readings | NMVTIS via EpicVIN | Mileage recorded on titles |
| Total loss | NMVTIS via EpicVIN | Total-loss reports from insurers, junk and salvage yards |
What Requires a Paid History Report
NHTSA reports recalls only. It does not report accidents, title brands or ownership history. Those records come from NMVTIS, the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System run by the U.S. Department of Justice. NMVTIS collects title brands (salvage, junk, flood, rebuilt), odometer readings from titles, and total-loss reports from insurers, junk and salvage yards. Brands follow the VIN across states, so a salvage title issued in one state stays attached to that vehicle in every state.
Full vehicle history reports on this site come from the partner EpicVIN: $1 for a 3-day trial, then a monthly plan until you cancel. DPPA (18 U.S.C. 2721) keeps owner names, addresses and phone numbers in DMV records private except for permissible purposes. This site shows vehicle data only.
Buyer Checklist Before You Pay

- Decode the VIN and compare year, model and engine to the listing.
- Check open NHTSA safety recalls for that VIN and confirm the repairs were completed.
- Check title brands, odometer readings and total-loss history in a paid report before any money changes hands.
