Texas Temporary Tags
What Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) publishes about temporary tags, what the tag must show, how to verify one, and which questions the official source did not answer.
At a glance
| Longest validity | TxDMV issues a 30-Day License Plate, plus 72-hour, 144-hour, one-trip and vehicle transit permits. The expiration is printed on the permit or plate. |
|---|---|
| Renewal | TxDMV's temporary-permit page states that a person may request an extension of the period a 30-day plate is valid, but it does not give a maximum extension. Confirm the length with TxDMV or the county tax office before relying on it. |
| Who issues it | TxDMV, county tax assessor-collector offices and TxDMV regional service centers. Under HB 718, from 1 July 2025 dealers issue metal plates at the time of sale instead of certain paper temporary tags, and county offices issue temporary registration metal plates for 30-Day and One-Trip permits. |
| What it must show | The permit number, issuing authority and expiration date. For dealer-issued tags, the plate itself is now metal rather than paper. |
How to verify a Texas tag
Check the document
The permit number, issuing authority and expiration date. For dealer-issued tags, the plate itself is now metal rather than paper.
Check with the issuer
Match the permit to the VIN, title application and bill of sale; then call the dealer and TxDMV or the county tax office. Police can check a permit during a stop.
Check the VIN
The VIN on the tag, the dashboard, the title and the bill of sale must match. If the seller cannot show a title application or bill of sale that matches the VIN, treat the tag as unverified.
If the tag is expired
Driving on an expired permit is a registration violation. Confirm the current penalty with TxDMV or the county tax office.
Driving out of state
TxDMV states the permit may only authorize operation in Texas, and tells buyers to verify validity before driving out of state.
What we could not verify
The maximum length of an extension, the fee schedule for each permit type, and the exact fields a dealer-issued metal tag must show. We list it here rather than fill the gap with a guess; confirm directly with Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV).
