How to verify a Florida tag
Check the document
The tag number, issuing dealer or agency, issue date and expiration date. Confirm any additional required fields with FLHSMV.
Check with the issuer
Call the dealer and the county tax collector, and compare the tag to the VIN and paperwork. Police can check it during a stop.
Check the VIN
The VIN on the tag, the dashboard, the title and the bill of sale must match. If the seller cannot show a title application or bill of sale that matches the VIN, treat the tag as unverified.
If the tag is expired
Using a temporary tag that expired 7 days ago or less is a noncriminal infraction and a nonmoving violation under §320.131, as FLHSMV's procedure notes. Longer periods carry higher exposure.
Driving out of state
A Florida tag supports Florida registration. Confirm acceptance with the other state before driving out of state.
What we could not verify
Renewal rules and the fee for each tag type beyond the $2 state fee. We list it here rather than fill the gap with a guess; confirm directly with Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV).
